Captain's Log #9: Back in the Captain's chair

Hey guys!

This weekend I went to Geek Girl Brunch! It was an absolute blast! Our brunch for this month was Lord of the Rings themed and it was fabulous.

I didn't know we doing a serious face with the props, so here I am smiling with a sword

Also, $2 mimosas? Yes, please.

I'm so glad I got to hang out with old friends and make new ones! To top it all off, I won a copy of The Silmarillion and an Arwen bookmark!

AND....

***SPECIAL NOTE***

If you are attending PAX South, I will be at the after-hours GGB multi-chapter event!! Come hang out and say hi!

And now, on to the Captain's Log!

Wayward Pines Trilogy by Blake Crouch. (Book) If your a regular reader here, you know I was super obsessed with the Wayward Pines TV show. Since we bought a Kindle, I decided to start reading more and the trilogy was free on the Amazon library. I'm currently on book 2 and I love it! It's very different from the TV show, so I like not knowing what will happen at the end. If you like creepiness, definitely check this one out.

Dorkface. (Blog) It's no secret, I love my fellow geek girl bloggers. I found Jemma on Twitter from some of the IGGPPC girls and I love her blog. From blogging tips, motivational posts, fun ramblings, DIYS, she has it all. I even joined #theGirlGang. Definitely give her a visit here.

Pokemon Moon. (Nintendo DS) We picked up Pokemon Sun and Moon and I absolutely adore it. This is the first full Pokemon game I've played so I love experiencing it for the first time with Jonathan who has played all of them. The graphics are great and I love the characters and storyline.

The ClueFinders. (PC...kinda) Okay, this is a little bit weird, but hear me out. When I was a kid and AOL was a thing, we received a free trial of this game. I absolutely loved the thing and played it for months, even though there was limited content. I mentioned it offhand to Jonathan a while back, and I couldn't even remember the name of it, just that it had math and Mothra (this was the 90's). Also, yes I was a nerd obsessed with an educational game. For Christmas, he managed to find the whole game and gave it to me. I cried of laughter and couldn't wait to reminisce on this dorky thing. Turns out, my math skills have barely improved but it's still as fun as ever. Now at 21, I can see how cheesy it is but I adore it. (Even though I had to do a little maneuvering since it only runs on Windows 95.)

Demolition Man. (Movie) It's no secret that I'm so behind on movies. I really suck at watching them, even though I love them. Last night, Jon convinced me to check this out and I'm so glad I did. It's like watching Galaxy Quest with Rambo. I loved it. Cheesy 90's action goodness is my favorite thing ever. I encourage all my fellow geeks to check this out.

Saturday Night Live. (TV) Ok, this is kind of weird but I cannot watch SNL on TV. I get too distracted and restless. Plus, I'm not usually a fan of the musical guests. So, I tend to watch the skits on Youtube or Hulu. I love to just watch these on my phone while I put on my makeup or when I'm cooking. Plus, I'm loving all the female comedians on there. They are hilarious!!! Check it out if you haven't seen it. I was one of those who checked out after Tina, Amy, and Jimmy left, but I'm so glad I got back into it.

What are you guys up to? Do you have any suggestions for what I should read, watch, or play next? Let's chat!

Captain's Log #1 -Hello July

As July begins, I have undergone some self-reflection. So many of my peers are doing things, creating things, going places, and just....living. I admire that and cannot help but feel slightly envious. So far this summer, all I have is a downsized paycheck and a marathon of 30 Rock under my belt. Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I decided I need to go out and do what I want to do. I really want to connect with people I admire and luckily, the
IGGPPC has been so helpful in bringing a group of women who are empowering and awesome into my life. I have been grateful for the online community, which helped lead to the creation of this blog.  Inspired by so many of the other women in the geek blogger community, I am ready to finally explore what I love instead of resigning myself to just moving through the days.

So, to start off this blog, now that introductions are out of the way, here's the basics of what I'm up to.

30 Rock, Season 6. It took me a while to get into this show, which was recommended by everyone after I finished Parks and Rec. I finally watched it while sick in bed with the flu and I loved it. It starts off slow but after the first three episodes, I was hooked. Now, I'm on Season 6 of 7 and cannot anticipate how it will end!

Wayward Pines, Season 2. If you haven't seen this show, it follows Ethan Burke who wakes up in a strange town called Wayward Pines. He is determined to uncover the mysterious secrets of the town but no one else seems to want to question the town's authority. This show exudes Welcome to Nightvale and Stepford Wives vibes and me and Jonathan are impatiently awaiting the next episode.  Warning, it is creepy and can get a little gory at times, but if you're into creepy mysteries, it's a very good show.

I Am Princess X By Cherie Priest. I just picked this up from our local library a few weeks ago and have yet to start it but the artwork in the book is amazing. A mystery entwined with a webcomic feel, it sounds so enticing. I'm really excited to read it tonight since it's due back on the 8th. Oops.

The Ex-Boyfriend's Handbook by Matt Dunn. This book is about Edward Middleton, a meek fellow who gets dumped by his girlfriend of 10 years and plans to makeover his life in order to win her back. I've started this book a week ago and I'm about 2/5 of the way through. I have to say, I'm just not super interested. It's not bad, per se, but it is kind of dull. The book is from the UK so it has a dry humor but, so far I'm having a hard time immersing myself in the plot. However, I will finish it to see if maybe it gets better by the end.

Destiny (Xbox 360). Part of being in a geeky relationship is finding games we both enjoy to play together. Jonathan actually bought the games for both our 360s and we became addicted. We bought all the current DLC but it looks like the new content will only be available on the Xbox One. Since buying two consoles would be a huge purchase, we've put that on hold for now. We still have plenty of content left to play but have been going slower, to relish it while it lasts.

Don't Starve Together (Steam). I'm constantly coming back to this game because the goofy storyline is wonderful yet also extremely frustrating. However, the new updates drew me back in a few days ago and I can tell I'll be spending a lot more time on this game again. I lost my other wireless mouse, so after I pick up a new one, it's on.

Diablo 3 (Xbox 360). This is my first run in the Diablo series and so far, I'm digging it. It's a little confusing, because the storyline arches over the 3 games and the references don't always make sense but it's a good game nonetheless. I haven't sat down to play this too much after I bought it but hopefully, when work schedules calm down, I can pick it back up.

What are you playing/reading/watching? Let's chat about it!
