My Favorite...Easter Candy

It's Friday which means another My Favorite post!

If this is your first My Favorite post, it's a prompt ran by my favorite person ever, Becca where you  talk about your favorite thing related to the prompt each week. This week the prompt is favorite Easter candies!

I don't really do a big thing for Easter since I got older but I do enjoy some Easter candies. My absolute favorites probably have to be Whopper Robin's Eggs.

I'm a sucker for Whoppers in general because they are little balls of joy, but the Easter ones are even more adorable! They are pastel little eggs and they are so dang cute!

Since this is a short post, I took inspo from Becca's post and also decided to talk about Easter candies I dislike! While I do have a few that I just dislike (jellybeans, I'm looking at you) I have to be blunt.

PEEPS.

ARE.

THE.

WORST.

They take the greatness of marshmallows and make them GROSS! I will die on this hill. Don't @ me.

Other than that, I think I'm decently okay with other Easter candies. I mean it's candy, what's not to love.

That's all for this week! If you decide to join in on this, be sure to leave your link down below!

I LOVE ice cream. It's just one of the most perfect desserts. It's comforting, cold, aesthetically pleasing, and there are so many flavors. If you haven't listened to Kirby Krackle, you are missing out on some awesome nerdy jams! Here's one of my favorites!

Catch me drunk-singing Madonna every time I go out. I think I also dressed up as her for Halloween about 5 times because 80's Madge is best.

N is for... Nick Jonas!

This is one of my absolute favorite colors besides pink and apparently that's kind of weird so I thought I would mention it here. I just think the color is so happy and yet relaxing and it's just great!

Z is for... Zone-Tan!

We'll just leave it at that...

That's my ABCS! Feel free to join in on this challenge! It was so much fun and it was actually pretty challenging!

My Favorite...Thing About Spring

I'm back with another My Favorite post!

It's been a hot minute since we've done one of these posts and I really want to get back into them because not only are they super fun, they also help out my friend Becca who hosts these! So if you decide to join these posts, make sure to check her blog out for the prompts every week!

This week's prompt is my favorite thing about spring! I'm a person who can never decide what season is their favorite (although I lean a bit closer to winter) so I love each season for what it brings.

For me springtime is the best time to pull out a cute contemporary and head outside for a long read. I also am a huge fan of those April showers and May flowers!

Enjoying the scenery and curling up with a book outside before mosquitoes begin to come out sounds perfect to me!

What is your favorite thing about springtime? Let's chat about it!

Top 5(ish) Geek-Centric Reads

One of my absolute favorite genres to read is books about being a geek. Whether it's a book following a geeky main character, or a book about living life in the best nerdy way, I am a huge sucker for books that I can relate to.

So I decided to share some of my favorite geeky reads with you guys! Maybe you've read these, and maybe you will find a new favorite book!

In no particular order

Geekerella by Ashley Poston/The Princess and the Fangirl

Was there any question that I wouldn't add these two to the list? They are two of my favorite geekcentric books and if you haven't read them, put down this computer and pick them up!

I have reviews of both these books on this site, but in short Geekerella is a Cinderella re-telling with a geeky twist. Starfield (think Star Trek) fangirl Elle is a nerd blogger who's subject is usually recapping Starfield episodes. When it's revealed that a new Starfield movie is coming out and a mainstream teen heartthrob is in the lead role, Elle is furious. Insert nerd rage hijinks and a convention ball while Elle tries to stop the movie from happening.

This book is cute and sweet with so much nerdy goodness thrown in. If you like fairy tales and Star Trek, I highly recommend.

The Princess and the Fangirl is a sequel to Geekerella and is a Princess and the Pauper retelling. Imogene is a huge Starfield fan and just so happens to look like the main actress in the film, Jessica Stone. What happens when they switch places and have to fit in as each other? Not to mention the fact that Jessica hates Starfield for an unknown reason and wants to be killed off and Imogene is running the campaign to save Jessica's character.

Geektastic: Stories from the Nerd Herd by Holly Black and Cecil Castellucci

This is probably my favorite book on this list. In this book is a collection of short nerdy stories by multiple authors including David Levithan, Holly  Black, Cassandra Clare, John Green, and so many more. What happens if a Klingon and a Jedi fall in love? Or read about best friends who love the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Like Buffy, space, or debate team? This book has it all.

My favorite story in this book is probably One of Us by Tracy Lynn about a girl who wants to learn to be a geek and it's just....really good. Just yes.

The Geek's Guide to Unrequited Love by Sarvanez Tash

This is one of the more recent reads for me but it's super adorable and takes place over NYCC weekend. This book follows a guy named Graham as he comes up with a plan to tell his best friend Roxy he is in love with her at NYCC. A plan that includes their favorite comic creator, a lot of courage, and a hell of a lot of hope.

This book was described as John Hughes meets Comic Con and I can definitely vouch for it. It's super cute and there's just so much geeky references and geek love in this book.

The Fangirl's Guide to the Galaxy by Sam Maggs

If you don't read any of these books but one, this is the one you should definitely pick up. This is one of the most mainstream reads on this list and it's written in the format of a guide to fandoms, conventions, websites, and more. I love this book so much I even have this signed poster of the cover!

The Secret Loves of Geek Girls by Various Authors

When I first read this book, it was very different from what I thought it was going to be but I ended up adoring it. This book follows multiple authors as they tell the story of a love of theirs. There is a ton of wlw content in this book and it's essentially a love letter to their younger selves. I definitely loved this book, so much that I gifted a copy to one of my closest friends last year.

Notable Mentions
  • Game Over by Jonathan Green
Horror anthology with all the stories based on classic games like Frogger, Donkey Kong, and Rampage
  • Wolf Boy by Evan Kuhlman
Follows a kid who is dealing with his family life after a tragedy by creating a comic book series.

I hope you enjoyed this list! What are some of your favorite geeky themed books? Let's chat about it!

Sunday Funday: Us, Dinner, and Dollar Drinks

Happy Monday!

This past week I worked the week straight with no days off so I had been pretty bummed to not really do a whole lot. However, the weekend actually was pretty eventful after work.

Saturday was Jon's niece's birthday so we headed there and celebrated with her party. It was really fun and we got to see a lot of family that we hadn't seen in awhile.

Sunday night, we ended up getting together with a friend of mine, Jocelyn (from the PAX South trip) and we headed to get dollaritas (which were super lame) and then to the Drafthouse to "get lit" as the kids say and watch Us.

The movie was super creepy and I loved all the ambiguity and hidden references in it. Also Winston Duke as a dad was just..... *heart eyes emoji*

via GIPHY

Jonathan also had a blast taking pics with the different props around the theater and I got to help work towards my goal of taking more photos. :)

Overall the weekend was great, but this morning I woke up sick as a dog in bed with no voice. So I've been resting a ton, reading in bed, and spraying terrible tasting numbing spray down my throat which is just as fun as it sounds -__-

However, I was able to finish Reflection by Elisabeth Kim, the Mulan retelling in the Twisted Tales series. I also started On The Come Up by Angie Thomas and I'm already 200 pages in and I adore it! I'll talk more about these in my April wrap-up later this month.

That's how my weekend has been going! How was yours? Let's chat about it!

Raineedayze Reads: The Princess and the Fangirl (Spoilers Inside!)

If you've been a follower for a while, you know how much I LOVED Geekerella by Ashley Poston. So when the sequel, The Princess and the Fangirl, based on the the Princess and the Pauper (or is it prince? Who knows!) was announced, you bet I was preordering as fast as I could.

The book came in and I devoured it within the day at work. Also, look at this beautiful cover!

The book follows geek girl Imogene, who is campaigning to save her favorite character Amara from Starfield from being "fridged" (a term used to describe a female character whose death is only used to further the male character's plot). This is the same Amara from the first book, portrayed by Jessica Stone.

The book is told in dual perspective between Imogen and Jessica Stone, the actress portraying Amara who is very against the entirety of Starfield and wants it her character to stay "dead".

At the beginning of the novel, I HATED Jessica and it was very different from the first book, because of how much I loved all the main characters in Geekerella. I honestly thought it would make me not love this book as much.

I was dead wrong.

Jessica's hatred of Starfield doesn't come from the actual show itself, but instead stems from the hate lobbed towards female actresses in sci-fi/fantasy (a la Kelly Marie Tran, Daisy Ridley, Brie Larson, Gal Gadot, the new Ghostbusters.....do I need to go on?)

I think in this time, this book is so impactful because it really delves into an idea of what it would be like to be a star and get all sorts of hate for not being what fans (read: angry nerd trolls) picture as the perfect princess, ghostbuster, or hero.

This book also has so many queer relationships which I am SO here for. I'm so in love with Imogene's mom's and want an entire mini story around them and Figurine It Out.

It also doesn't pander to geek girls. Ashley Poston herself is a geek who writes the way fangirls talk. I go more in to detail about this in my Youtube review (link TBA). But, so much of the dialogue is authentic fangirl speak and the references are hilarious and lovely.

Also, hella throwbacks to the OG book and so much cute Dare and Elle <3

Overall, I gave this book a 5/5 and it joins Geekerella as being one of my all time favorite reads! I cannot wait to see if more comes to this series!

Have you read this book? Let's chat about it!
